The Sydney-born, Townsville-raised 21-year-old model finished fourth.
Venezuelan 18-year-old Stefania Fernandez won the title in The Bahamas on Sunday, continuing the South American nation's domination of the event.
Last year's winner, Dayana Mendoza, of Venezuela , presented Fernandez with her crown.
Venezuelan beauties have won the pageant six times.
Finch's odds shortened dramatically in the days before the event, making her one of the favourites and she lived up to the hype, looking stunning in the swimsuit and evening gown rounds and earning a place in the final five.
The Miss Universe title came down to the final question, a hurdle that has derailed frontrunners and immortalised them on YouTube.
When her name was called to take centre stage for her question, Finch took a deep breath, placed her left hand on her waist and waited.
"Tonight you were judged on how you looked in a bathing suit," Valeria Mazza, the judge selected to probe Finch with a question, asked.
"In some countries women aren't allowed to wear a swimsuit. How does that make you feel?"
Finch began with an "ummmmm", but then leapt on the question, telling the judges and tens of millions of viewers around the world that wearing a swimsuit was a "beautiful thing".
"It gives everyone of us the chance to show our figures and our toned bodies and what we have worked hard for and I think our bodies are a beautiful part of a woman and we should definitely, you know, show them to the rest of the world," Finch said.
The crowd liked the answer but apparently it was not enough to score the Miss Universe crown.
Finch's fourth, from 83 contestants, was the best result for an Australian since Hawkins won in 2004.
The strong result is expected to earn the model millions of dollars in endorsement deals, with lingerie giant Victoria's Secret reportedly interested in offering her a contract and department stores and cosmetics companies lining up to sign her.
Finch is also believed to have signed on to be part of Celebrity MasterChef Australia.
The first runner-up at this year's pageant was Miss Dominican Republic, Ada Aimee de la Cruz.
Miss Kosovo, Droga Ganusha, was third and Miss Puerto Rico, Mayra Matos Perez, was fifth.
